Park Tool AP-1 – Adhesive Primer for Threadlockers and Retaining Compounds
Park Tool AP-1 Adhesive Primer is a primer that prepares surfaces for the use of Park Tool TLR-1, TLR-2, and RC-1 products. It improves the performance of threadlockers and retaining compounds, accelerates curing, and helps ensure reliable adhesion in the correct applications.
AP-1 is specifically intended for use with Park Tool TLR-1 Medium Strength Threadlocker, TLR-2 High Strength Threadlocker, and RC-1 Press Fit Retaining Compound. It is used to pretreat parts, fasteners, threads, and mating surfaces before applying the actual locking agent.
The product is especially important when a threadlocker or retaining compound is in contact with a carbon fiber frame or carbon fiber component. According to Park Tool, AP-1 should be used on all areas of parts, fasteners, and carbon fiber surfaces where TLR-1, TLR-2, or RC-1 products come into contact with carbon fiber.
Essential pretreatment for carbon fiber frames and press-fit installations
Park Tool AP-1 is not a threadlocker or retaining compound itself, but a pretreatment agent. Its task is to prepare the surface so that TLR-1, TLR-2, and RC-1 products perform as intended. This is particularly important in the context of press-fit bottom brackets, bearings, threaded parts, and carbon fiber frames.
With the RC-1 Retaining Compound, AP-1 is suitable for pretreating press-fit bottom brackets, bearing housings, and other zero-clearance press-fit joints. With TLR-1 and TLR-2 threadlockers, it can be used on threads and fasteners where improved compound performance and controlled curing are desired.
In carbon fiber applications, AP-1 is especially important because, without proper priming, the locking agent can bond to the surface too permanently. For this reason, it should always be used according to the manufacturer's instructions, particularly for PF30-style bottom brackets, carbon fiber frames, and bearings that are pressed into carbon fiber structures.
Painted surfaces can be sensitive to primers and locking agents. If necessary, test on an inconspicuous area and wipe any excess material off painted surfaces immediately.
