Description
Lake MXZ 305 winter cycling shoes
Warm winter cycling shoes for demanding sub-zero conditions
The Lake MXZ305 is a high-cut cycling shoe designed for cold winter conditions, combining effective insulation, a premium leather construction and an SPD-compatible sole. It is particularly well suited to winter mountain biking, fat biking, gravel riding and year-round commuting when the insulation provided by regular cycling shoes is no longer enough.
A key feature of the MXZ305 is the Lake Winter Extreme last, with a toe box that is roomier and higher than usual to accommodate warm air and thicker winter socks. This design reduces pressure on the foot and helps maintain circulation, which is essential for keeping your toes warm on long rides in freezing weather.
The shoe's 200 g Thinsulate insulation and temperature-regulating Outlast lining keep your feet warm and help wick moisture away from the skin. The water-repellent full-grain leather upper, reinforced toe and protective leather flap effectively shield your feet from cold winds, snow and splashes.
The BOA M4 closure can be adjusted while wearing gloves for a secure fit, while the grippy Lake Enduro outsole gives you confidence if you need to walk your bike along a winter trail.
The manufacturer's recommended operating temperature range is approximately −14 °C to +7 °C. The shoes are compatible with two-bolt SPD-style mountain bike cleats.
This model runs small. We recommend ordering one size larger than your usual shoe size.
Lake MXZ305 – warmth, fit and control for winter riding
In winter cycling, cold feet are not caused solely by inadequate insulation. Shoes that are too tight, thick socks that get compressed and moisture that builds up inside the shoe can all significantly reduce comfort. The Lake MXZ305 is designed to address these issues as a whole.
The Winter Extreme last gives your toes room
Lake uses a Winter Extreme last developed specifically for winter cycling in the MXZ305. The forefoot is noticeably roomier and higher than in performance summer cycling shoes.
The extra space allows you to wear a thicker merino wool sock without your toes pressing against one another. It also leaves a layer of air inside the shoe, which acts as insulation. At the same time, the heel, arch and instep are shaped to support your foot, so you don't need to tighten the shoe uncomfortably.
Getting the fit right is especially important in a winter cycling shoe: the tightest possible shoe is not the warmest option.
Thinsulate and Outlast work together
The MXZ305's insulation relies on several materials working together.
200 g Thinsulate insulation reduces heat loss through the shoe's outer shell. It provides effective insulation without unnecessary bulk.
The temperature-regulating Outlast lining helps manage the temperature inside the shoe and wick moisture away from your feet. This is particularly useful during mountain rides at varying intensities, when you generate plenty of heat on climbs and your feet are exposed to cold air on descents.
The roomy toe box, insulation and breathable construction complement one another to help keep your feet as warm as possible during prolonged exposure to freezing conditions.
Premium leather upper and protective construction
The upper is made from water-repellent full-grain leather. The leather provides good protection from wind and moisture while retaining its natural breathability.
The toe features a Helcor leather reinforcement that resists abrasion and moisture. It provides protection against impacts, splashes and scuffs, particularly during mountain biking.
A leather protective flap over the closure system helps keep snow, dirt and cold air from entering the shoe.
The MXZ305 is designed to be highly water-repellent, but it does not have a fully waterproof membrane. This design helps retain breathability and moisture management in cold conditions. Water may seep into the shoe during prolonged rain or in wet slush.
BOA M4 – easy to adjust while wearing winter gloves
The shoe features the BOA Fit System M4 closure, designed to work in freezing temperatures, snow and dirty conditions.
You can adjust the closure while wearing winter gloves, without having to undo or tie laces mid-ride. The system helps keep your heel in place while leaving enough room in the toe box.
Lake Ultra Bomb-Proof Enduro outsole
The MXZ305 outsole is designed to combine efficient pedalling with the walking grip needed in winter conditions.
The glass-fibre-reinforced nylon construction provides the stiffness needed for pedalling, while the aggressive tread on the Enduro rubber outsole improves grip on snow, trails and uneven surfaces. The sole also features glass-fibre-reinforced traction zones.
The shoe is compatible with two-bolt mountain bike cleat systems such as Shimano SPD. The sole also makes it possible to walk when you need to push your bike. However, it is not a substitute for studded winter shoes on extremely slippery ice.
Choosing the right size and fit
For the MXZ305, Lake recommends choosing a size approximately 1–1.5 sizes larger than your regular cycling shoes from the same brand when wearing winter socks. In addition to foot length, consider sock thickness, foot width and sufficient room for your toes.
The toe box should not feel as snug as it would in a road racing shoe. Your toes should be able to move freely, while your heel stays securely in place.
