When to fit studded tyres?

In a Finnish winter, studded tyres are a cyclist's most important piece of safety equipment. On an icy road an ordinary tyre loses grip without warning, while studs bite into the ice. Many riders switch to studded tyres when mornings start to dip below zero and ride them until spring.

Choosing a studded tyre

  • Number of studs – more studs give more grip on ice, but add weight and rolling resistance. A moderate stud count is often enough for city riding; choose more for icy trails and packed snow.
  • Tread and width – a wide, aggressive tyre grips in snow and slush, a narrower one rolls more easily on ploughed roads.
  • Size – check the right size on the sidewall of your current tyre (e.g. 42-622) and make sure the tyre fits your frame and mudguards.

Breaking in and pressure

Manufacturers recommend breaking in new studded tyres gently on tarmac so the studs settle in place. Avoid hard braking and acceleration at first. Lower pressure gives more grip on ice and snow – but stay within the recommended range printed on the sidewall.

Lights and visibility

Riding in the dark, you need a white front light and a red rear light. A bright front light helps you spot bumps and icy patches, and reflectors and reflective clothing make you more visible. Cold reduces battery life, so charge your lights regularly.

Gear for freezing temperatures

Dress in layers and protect your hands, feet and head in particular. See cycling clothing in layers.

Looking after your bike in winter

Salt and grit wear the chain and drivetrain quickly. Rinse the bike regularly, dry the chain and lubricate it with a suitable oil – see chain care. A service is a good idea in spring after the winter.
