The Park Tool MLP-1.2 is a pair of master link pliers for riders and mechanics who want to open and close a chain quick link quickly and with control. The main benefit is that dirty or tightly stuck master links are much easier to open and close than by hand. The tool is compatible with quick links on many 5- to 13-speed derailleur chains.
Park Tool MLP-1.2 – the right tool for opening and closing chain quick links
The Park Tool MLP-1.2 is not a chain breaker, but a specialized pair of pliers for chain quick links. According to Park Tool, modern chains often use a master link, quick link or power link, which allows the chain to be opened without pushing out a pin. In practice, however, dirt, wear and corrosion can make it difficult to open a link by hand, and that is exactly what the MLP-1.2 is designed for.
The specially shaped jaws are placed on the quick link; squeezing the pliers opens the link, while pulling them closes it. This makes the tool very useful for cleaning, replacing and servicing a chain. Park Tool’s search result states that the tool is compatible with 5- to 13-speed derailleur chains, including SRAM eTap AXS, Shimano XTR 12-speed and Campagnolo Ekar 13-speed. It is also worth noting that the tool is not suitable for older-style links with a separate spring clip or side plate, which are often found on older drivetrains or single-speed bikes.
