Choosing a kids' or youth bike

A light bike in the right size makes children want to ride. Choose the wheel size by height and know when it is time to move up a size.

Weight matters even more than for adults

A child weighs only a fraction of an adult, so a heavy bike feels many times heavier to them. A light bike is easier to pedal, steer and lift – and it keeps riding fun. Also check that small hands can reach the brake levers.

Wheel size by the child's height

Kids' bikes are sized by wheel size. What matters is the child's height and inseam, not age – the table is indicative only.

Child's heightWheel sizeTypical age
85–105 cm12" (balance bike)2–4 years
100–120 cm16"4–6 years
115–135 cm20"6–9 years
130–150 cm24"8–12 years
over 145 cm26"–27.5" or adult XS11 years –

Do not buy a bike that is too big to grow into: the child should reach the ground with their toes while seated and handle the bike confidently.

From balance bike to pedal bike

On a balance bike a child learns balance without stabilisers. Once balance is there, the step to a pedal bike is usually quick.

Gears and brakes

From 20-inch wheels upwards, gears help on hills and longer rides. Hand brakes teach the right braking technique for an adult bike later. For young trail riders, a suspension fork and disc brakes add confidence.

Always wear a helmet

A well-fitting helmet belongs on every ride. See our helmet guide – a child's helmet is measured the same way as an adult's.
